Scope and Contents Collection of loose prints and one duplicate by various unidentified photographers, most probably dating from the 1920s. The original owner, Hester McGivering, worked for Christian Salvesen Limited. It formed the third shore-based whaling station on South Georgia at Leith Harbour in November 1909 and continued operating there until 1960/61. It is therefore probable that most of the photographs of whaling stations on South Georgia are of Leith Harbour. The photographs vary considerably...

158 x 113 mm. A view from across the harbour. At the left of the picture the hulk of the 'Great Britain' can be seen. Completed to the design of Isambard Brunel in 1849, she was the first iron-built, screw-driven vessel to cross the Atlantic. Damaged in a gale off the Horn in 1886, she sought shelter in Port Stanley and there remained until her return to Bristol in June 1970.
