190 x 141 mm. A view taken from the hill overlooking Princes Street, and showing the waterfront. At the left a small part of the inadequate Dunedin jetty can be seen with Princes Street following the course of the waterfront. Probably by William Meluish. It was amongst the conglomeration of houses at the nearer end of the street that Meluish had his studio.

Scope and Contents 195 x 144 mm. A similar view to Y3089B/2, and showing the building that has taken place in two years. The most conspicuous new constructions visible here are the two stone buildings at the nearer end of Princes Street. The one on the left, only half completed, is the Medical Hall. Behind it and near the fence, what looks like a greenhouse roof, is, according to Hardwicke Knight (‘Photography in New Zealand’, p 45) the skylight of the studio of the Dunedin photographer, James Wilson. 191 x 140 mm. A view looking down on the town centre, showing the grid pattern of its plan, with small domestic dwellings scattered on the hillsides outside the centre. The plan for Dunedin was drawn up by Charles Kettle, a veteran explorer of New Zealand, who arrived at Otago in 1846.

265 x 360 mm. An exterior view of the First Church, designed by R.A. Lawson and built between 1867-1873. Generally considered one of the finest churches in New Zealand, it is built in a restrained Gothic style in Oamaru stone, with a 175 foot spire.
