Originally the Pins XII Catholic University College, the non-denominational university came into existence on January 1 1964. With the change of name of two of the participating states, it later became the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (U.B.L.S.). The Roma Campus was nationalized in October 1975 and thenceforward became the National University of Lesotho.
