841 x 193 mm (three prints joined). Panoramic view of the town of Wu-chen with the river in the foreground. Situated 120 miles west of Canton near the border between Kwangsi and Kwantung Provinces, the town lies on the West River at the mouth of the Kwei River. It was not opened for foreign trade until 1897. This print is reproduced in Clark Worswick, 'Imperial China, photographs 1850-1912' (Pennwick/Crown 1978) pp. 18-19

Taken on the outer bank of a busy bend in the river and looking across to a customs building, where orderly lines of crates can be seen on the quayside and numerous small boats are tied up. Behind the customs house is a four-storey building with a clock-tower. There is a park/area of trees to the left of the customs building, with a perimeter road running beside the river.
