The rock of Trichinopoly from the east, 1869
321 x 191 mm. View looking over the rooftops at part of the town towards the great rock which is situated at the N end of Trichinopoly. The rock has a temple and a fort at its summit, built by a Madura prince between 1660 and 1670. The capital of successive Tamil kingdoms between the 10th and 17th centuries and located 180 miles SW of Madras, Trichinopoly was ceded to the British by the Nawab of Arcot in 1801. Bourne no. 2054.

Rock is whitish gray. Note among the little figures on the edge of the roof the frequent occurrences of the Bull Nandi. (Fisher).
