The caption continues: "The buds must be gathered just before they open otherwise the 'head' of the clove which is the calyx and a mass of white stamens, is lost and a poor quality sample thus produced. At this stage the clove buds are a lovely light green tinged with pink. A few open flowers can be seen in the picture.'

The large ocean liners are unable to come alongside the wharf so the cloves are taken out by lighters to the ships which anchor in the harbour. (Part of the old city of Zanzibar) with it's large stone built Arab houses is seen in the background).' Three of these buildings are identified as: 'Customs Office, Sultan's Palace, Administration Building.'
