Botanic Garden, St Vincent, 1879 - 1887

Scope and Contents 244 x 191 mm. A view looking along a path in the gardens with trees and shrubs either side. Situated just below Government House and founded in 1763, the gardens are the oldest in the New World. Bligh's voyage to the South Seas in HMS 'Bounty' in 1787, which ended in mutiny, was made in order to supply the gardens with the breadfruit tree.

A modern caption on the reverse of the print states 'The Last family of true Caribs - St. Vincent 1915 (?)' The date here is certainly wrong , but the rest of the information may well be correct. The Caribs, a warlike seafaring race from the coasts of Bolivia and Brazil originally captured many of the West Indian Islands shortly before the European discovery of the New World, massacring and...

Disused sugar refinery, 1900 - 1910

Scope and Contents 153 x 207 mm. A view showing St. Vincent islanders standing outside a derelict stone building, inside which can be seen a large water wheel and various other pieces of machinery. Formerly dependent on sugar, by the early 1900s the island's economy had switched to a reliance on cotton and arrowroot.

A sharply defined view from a hillside behind the town, looking along the bay and showing the town and harbour with steamers at anchor in the deeper water and smaller sailing boats closer inshore. At the far end of the bay the landing pier can be seen, with the police barracks partially obscured by other buildings.
