The Temple of Apollo, 1957 - 1974

A religious and political centre dating to the 7th century B.C. at the end of the Roman era. Among the ruins in the area are various building remains, baths and palestra. The sanctuary of Apollo was destroyed by earthquake in the late 4th century A.D.

Half-plate (landscape format). 16 miles from Limassol. Note terrain to the left of the picture for vineyards. In foreground is the village of Monagri and just behind it Doros. (good view to compare with terracings occurring in English down counties as possible remains of Roman vineyards.

Half-plate (landscape format). By the carriage is seen the beginning of a vast series of slag heaps left from ancient copper smelting. Middle distance, the monastery of Scoriotissa and beyond that on the left, the church of the village of Katydata: olive trees and caroabs: one of the richest valleys in Cyprus: splendid water supply coming straight down from the mountains.
