The typewriten caption on the reverse reads 'Another view of the holy stone figures of Esie, which stand in a clearing amidst a grove of oil palms and others [sic] trees about 31 miles south of Ilorin, Nigeria. The figure to the right is covered all over with chicken's blood whichhas been sacrificed ti [sic] it'.

The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'They were discovered in a clearing amidst a grove of oil palms and other trees, the clearing itself bordered by peregun trees, a kind of aloes planted round holy places. The grove is today an important centre of the fertility cult. Natives of Esie found the figures about 1773.
