At midday a bombardment of Omdurman was commenced and the rest of the day was spent making preparations for the expected Dervish attack the following dawn.

Scope and Contents 160 x 109 mm. A view showing a newly released fellow-prisoner of Charles Neufeld's in Yakoub's courtyard (Yakoub was a half-brother of the Khalifa). This man is probably Ibrahim Fawzi Pasha. Originally a cadet in the Egyptian administration in the Sudan, in 1874 he served under Gordon in Equatoria. Emin Pasha took his place when he was convicted of irregularities and for a time he was Arabi Pasha's chief of Police in Cairo (1882). Again employed by Gordon, he was in charge of the...

The Khalifa lost a staggering 11,000 men killed and 16,000 wounded at Omdurman. Anglo-Egyptian losses totalled 48 killed and 382 wounded. (However, the Mahdist losses have been, and continue to be, a matter for dispute).

Neufeld was captured by Mahdist forces in 1887 while accompanying a caravan of arms into the Sudan. He remained in prison, often in chains as seen here, until the relief of Omdurman in 1898.
