Newscuttings on the Straits Settlements

Scope and Contents A scrapbook of cuttings from newspapers of the Straits Settlements concerning events in the colony. Much of the volume is concerned with Brown's involvement with the Legislative Council. There are articles regarding his disputed nomination by the Penang Chamber of Commerce in 1893, and his appointment to the Council in 1894 and 1897. There is also extensive coverage of the Council’s work, including newscuttings on the passage of bills regarding harbours, Indian immigration, liquor, opium...
