Scope and Contents From the Fonds: A series of thirty-two photographs taken by Douglas Moore in 1949, depicting views and aspects of the lives and conditions of the inhabitants of Hong Kong. The photographs were printed and mounted for an exhibition at the North Staffordshire Polytechnic in the 1980s. The average size of each print (inner mount measurement) is 290 mm x 360 mm. Weihai, ceded to the British in 1898 'for so long a period as Port Arthur remains in the occupation of Russia', was the northern naval base of the British China Squadron, and in fact remained in British hands until 1930.

Scope and Contents The Rev. Alex Gregory, a young minister, and Dr James M. Howie, trained at Edinburgh, came out to China in 1888 and began work at Chang-pu (Changpoo) early in 1889. Gregory opened a boys' school but was invalided in 1892; he continued his interest in the mission until his death in 1945.
