The cataloguing of the collection has occurred in several stages. In 1921, the RCI Librarian Evans Lewin listed the main English language material in four series, assigning each a letter, A to D. Much of the correspondence relates to an article printed in the 'Penang Gazette' on 17 April 1827, written by Captain Lake, Inspector-General of Plans at Penang, criticising the treaty the that Burney had recently negotiated with Siam [Thailand]. Several of the letters were written by William Cox, the editor of the paper. Burney's complaints to the Government of India were upheld.
