Pretty joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1914 and was British Resident in Brunei from 1948-1951. After retirement he was Agent in the U.K. for the Government of Brunei from 1957 until death.

All these prints relate to the Jackson/Gedge Expedition of 1888-91 (see below). 80 are from negatives in the Royal Geographical Society and one from the negatives now in RCS (iii).
