Born in Roxburghshire and educated at Edinburgh University, Fairbairn came to Cape Town in 1823 to open a school with Thomas Pringle. This project was not successful and in 1824 he became the first editor (with Pringle) of the short-lived ‘South African Journal’. Letters of Edward Nicholas Kendall

Scope and Contents A half length, seated studio portrait of Lieutenant Colonel William Wynne Apperley (1808-1870), Indian Remount Agent at the Cape 1857-1860 (resident at Cape 1858-1859). Apperley was commissioned Cornet in the Bengal Cavalry in 1823 and appointed an assistant at the Hissar Stud in 1838. From 1840-1843 and 1845-1852 he was in charge of the Poosah Stud in Bihar, the period 1834-1845 being spent purchasing horses in Australia. Lieutenant General Wynyard C.B ., 1859

Scope and Contents

A half length seated studio portrait of Sir Robert Henry Wynyard in uniform. Wynyard (1802-1864) was commissioned as an ensign into the 58th Foot in 1819 and later served in Māori War of 1845-47. He was stationed in Australia 1847-1851 and again in New Zealand from 1851-1858 (Lieutenant Governor, New Ulster Province 1851-1853). From 1859-1863 he was Lieutenant Governor of the Cape.
