Scope and Contents A studio group portrait showing the uniformed figures of, from left to right: Colonel John Thomas Eustace (1825-1910), soldier and civil servant. Gazetted into the 60th Rifles 1844, served in Canada and later in the Crimea with the Osmanli Irregular cavalry. He retired to Wynberg and later in life became a civil servant, being appointed Resident with Chief Sarili at Butterworth from 1875-1879. He was appointed Civil Commissioner for Namaqualand in 1879 and ended his career as Civil...

A seated, three-quarter length studio portrait of Sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse (1811-1887), Governor of the Cape 1852-1870. Wodehouse's career started as a writer in Ceylon [Sri Lanka] in 1828 where he served until 1850. During 1851-1854 he was Superintendent in British Honduras and Governor of British Guiana during 1854-1861. After leaving the Cape he was Governor of Bombay 1872-1877.
