Opening of the Cinnabar mines in Tegora Hill, Upper Sarawak, 1880, 1880

240 x 188 mm. A view looking down on Chinese gardens and labourers' house in a jungle clearing at the Tegora Hill Cinnabar Mines situated some 60 miles from Kuching. The houses raised off the ground are Malay houses. A note on the reverse states that the tree in the centre of the print is a Tapa tree and supposed to be upwards of 200 feet high with parasitic pine in branches.

Scope and Contents 240 x 187 mm. View looking down onto the thatched huts of the labour force, with partially cleared jungle on the hillside beyond. The note on the reverse continues: ‘Showing Chinese gardens and coolie [i.e. labourer's] house. Those raised off the ground are Malay houses. The large tree in the centre of the picture is a Tapa tree & supposed to be upwards of 200 ft high with parasitic pine in branches. The Malay gardens are at the back & full of bananas or pisangs’. On the taller, known as a Belawing, the heads of enemies are hung temporarily; on the shorter, pieces of dried human flesh have been fastened by means of skewers, as offerings to the omen birds in this case, hawks.
