Sir Laurence Guillemard landing at Alor Star, January 1921, 1921-01-12

Scope and Contents

198 x 145 mm. A view looking along the landing stage towards the gangway along which Sir Laurence Nunns GUILLEMARD (1862-1951), Governor of the Straits Settlements 1919-1927, is disembarking from a river steamer. Alwyn Sidney HAYNES, Secretary to Guillemard, stands behind him at the top of the gangway. This visit, on January 12 1921, was Guillemard's first to Kedah.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The majority of the photographs relate to the early stages of Sheppard’s career with the Malayan Civil Service. They illustrate his accommodation; varied range of work in Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Perak and Terengganu; Malay and European colleagues; official events, military service, travel and recreation. A number of prints are uncaptioned and have been provided with tentative titles in square brackets and approximate dates. The images begin with Sheppard's arrival in Jan. 1928...

Two annotated drafts of an article by Hugh Bryson describing how the tribute of golden and silver trees and flowers was sent from the Sultan of Kedah to King Edward VII in 1909, following the transfer of the suzerainty of Kedah from Siam to Britain. There is also a letter from Bryson to the Royal Archives at Windsor, enquiring about their location (7 sheets).
