They relate to the career of James Alexander Swettenham, who, after serving in Ceylon and Cyprus, became Colonial Secretary in Singapore in 1895. He was Governor of British Guyana 1901-1904 and of Jamaica 1904-1907. His period in Singapore coincided with the service in Malaya of his more famous brother, Sir Frank Swettenham. Their father was James Oldham Swettenham, Solicitor of Belper.
