The Town Hall, Port Elizabeth, 1865 - 1878

188 x 134 mm. Showing the Market Square façade of the Town Hall, a two storey building with a porticoed entrance. The foundation stone was laid in 1858 by Sir George Grey and the building completed in 1862. A tower was later added to the building.

98 x 139 mm. Showing a three storey stone building with cornices and elaborate sculptured pairs of columns between the windows. Judging by the tablet at the top of the building, which shows two figures operating a press, this is presumably the office of one of the Port Elizabeth newspapers.

Collection of loose prints measuring approximately 105 x 80 mm., with extensive typewritten captions on a separate sheet. The captions have been used as titles and may include language which is offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. They have been retained to reflect the context of their creation. The captions from the album have been removed, and the longer descriptive extracts taken from the typewritten sheet (dated April 10 1898) are inserted with the photographs.
