Looking down the 'Valley' to the sea, 1897 - 1898
'This is a view of the Valley looking out to sea. The chimneys in the centre are those of the Electric Power Station, belong to the Tramway Co. The buildings at the extreme left are a Sweet and Preserve Factory. The flat looking buildings at the top of the hill on the left is one side of the Fort. The other large sheds are principally used for storing wool.'

'The Town Hall at the end of the street is situated on one side of the square. The first Tram on the right hand corner is one of those which run from the extreme North to South end of the town, a distance of about 3 miles, whilst the second, or lower one, is one of those used for hill climbing.'

The Terminus Hotel is at the adjacent corner on the Jetty Street side of the square. A small portion of the Post Office (Y3059V/5) can be seen at the extreme left.

'A poor photo of Messr Gleghorn, Harris and Stephen's Drapery Establishment situated in the Market Square. It was taken during the Jubilee, which accounts for the decorations. It was here that Em used to be Head Book-keeper for the Retail Dept. The church on the left, a little way up the hill, is that of St. Augustine's, Roman Catholic.'

'The block with the white arched windows in the centre of the picture just off the end of the jetty is that of P. Davis and sons. The building at the top of the Hill a little to the right of the lighthouse you may recognise as the Grey Institute shown in No. 4. The large block on the left is H.M. Customs House.'

The rest of the images are uncaptioned, but their general locations have been identified by reference to the diary RCMS 353/1.

They have been retained to reflect the context of the collection's creation. The book resulted from a journey from Cape Town via Kimberley and the Transvaal to the Victoria Falls and back to Port Elizabeth.
