An appreciation of the life of William French (1897-1960) soldier, naturalist and adventurer extraordinaire

Scope and Contents The collection was compiled by Allan Allison, Carlisle City Museum Assistant (1956-66) and Senior Nature Reserve Warden with Nature Conservancy Scotland (1968-78), who became acquainted with French during the final years of his life. Beyond the quay can be seen Government House and the Botanical Gardens, Farm Cove, and the naval deport on Garden Island. A richly bound album containing glossy black and white prints measuring 350 x 274 mm. The printed title page reads 'Presented with the compliments of The Government of New South Wales. C.G. Wade [signed] Premier. Sydney, New South Wales, 1909'. Prints mounted back to back, without borders. All prints captioned, either on the negative or stuck on to the print.

Scope and Contents A loose black and white print (two more prints missing), showing embarked troops waving to crowds on the dockside. A handwritten note on the back of the print states: 'Departure of A Battery, RAA, S.S. Warregal (for Boer War) left Port Jackson 30 Dec 1899'. The outbreak of the war on 11th October 1899 produced enthusiastic volunteering throughout the Australian colonies.
