A view looking northwest towards the piles of provisions in the Indian Commissariat Lines, with the masts of a ship visible beyond and the houses of El Geif (the mainland suburb of Suakin) in the distance. The Indian Commissariat Lines were situated on the mainland south of Suakin Island and east of El Geif. In the distance at the right can be seen the Caravanserai (see Y3042A/55).

Another aspect of the battle that came in for later criticism was the killing of wounded dervishes. In many cases, however, there was little else the advancing army could do since throughout all the Sudan campaigns it was dervish practice to fight to the death and several men were killed and wounded while attempting to help the fallen.

Scope and Contents From the File: A collection of photographs on 41 album sheets. Typed on a piece of paper stuck on one album sheet is: 'ALBUM 2. All the photographs in this album were taken by me, on a safari from Victoria (B. Cameroons) to Port Sudan. This journey lasted from April 7/35 till August 2/36. The photographs are of anthropological interest only, and deal mostly with the Mangbetu tribe in the northern Congo; the Karamojong in Northern Uganda, and various tribes in the southern Sudan.
