Scope and Contents From the Fonds: Collection of prints inserted in a bound copy of the Rhodesia-Nyasaland Royal Commission Report (Cmd. 5949) 1939. Written on the title page is 'Illustrated with the Chairman's snapshot photographs.' Plate 1 is inside the front cover; the remainder are in pairs on sheets of paper bound into the volume at intervals. They are prints of sharp definition and high quality, mostly 140 x 90 mm, but numbers 5, 17, 18, 44, 46 and 47 are approximately 95 x 120 mm. All have hand-written captions. ...

The Tuli (or Shashi) River stretched nearly 1000 yards from bank to bank, but at the time the Pioneer Column was there, before the rains, the river itself was only a few hundred yards across and the flat riverbed was used as a football pitch.

Showing the earthwork fort built on the crest of rising ground about half a mile from the kopje. Inside the stockade thatched huts and field pieces can be seen with the Union Jack flying in the centre. Construction of the fort was started on September 15th and this photograph of the completed stockade was probably taken towards the end of the month.

A view looking towards the summit of the kopje with a protective thorn zariba surrounding the hill in the foreground, inside which are wagons and tents. On the summit of the kopje is the earthworks fort itself with an encampment of bell tents inside a brushwood perimeter fence and a sandbag lookout post. The fort itself was built, after the main body of the column had passed through, by a troop of BSA Co. police left behind as a garrison by Willoughby.

Scope and Contents Showing two circular ‘daga’ and thatch huts with a stone wall beyond and the Union Jack flying in the background. ‘On the plateau near the head of the Pass, the Column laagered, and on rising ground a short distance away Colonel Pennefather ordered the construction of a fort. Strong stakes were driven into the earth to stand about six feet above the ground, and branches were woven into the interstices between them. At a distance of about twenty feet from the stockade a ditch five feet deep...
