Written on the title page is 'Illustrated with the Chairman's snapshot photographs.' Plate 1 is inside the front cover; the remainder are in pairs on sheets of paper bound into the volume at intervals. They are prints of sharp definition and high quality, mostly 140 x 90 mm, but numbers 5, 17, 18, 44, 46 and 47 are approximately 95 x 120 mm. All have hand-written captions. ...

Scope and Contents Showing Chibi (in a white blanket, second from right) and his followers sitting on the ground facing the camera with Robert Beale of ‘B’ Troop and another unidentified pioneer standing in the background. Chibi (or Chiri) was the title of the paramount chiefs of the Mari (or Mhari), a branch of the Karanga cluster of Shona and known as the Banyai in the nineteenth century (see 'Historical Dictionary of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe', R. Kent Rasmussen, 1979). The Chibi in 1890 was Madhlangore (d. 1907)....
