Nyasaland diaries of David Lawson

Eleven diaries beginning in Cape Town, 1 January 1932, which Lawson was travelling through on route to take up his post, and continuing with occasional gaps up to 1943. The writing is mainly manuscript, but there are some inserted typescript entries. Although Lawson's will bequeathed 'the diaries written by me while a member of the Colonial Civil Service in Nyasaland from 1932 to 1944', there are no volumes for 1941 or 1944.

A landscape view showing hills in the background. The typescript catalogue states that this photograph was taken in Tanzania. However, no trace can be found of a Nyika in Tanzania. It may possibly be in Malawi, as there is a Nyika National Park and Plateau close to Lake Nyasa which is the likely location of the photograph adjacent to this on the album page.

215 x 165 mm. A view of the debris at the base of a tree trunk. The caption continues: 'These are neither flower petals nor wood shavings. They are ants' wings. At certain times of the year white ants become 'air-minded' and assume long pairs of wings with which they migrate. On arrival at their new home the wings are discarded.'
