Showing the arrival of Sir Frank Swettenham (standing beside coach) at the wooden pavilion constructed for the conference of the rulers and administrators of the Federated Malay States held in Kuala Lumpur in July 1903. In the foreground stands a guard of honour of Indian Cavalry. Scope and Contents

283 x 215 mm. A view looking down on a deep cutting, with a ballast train being unloaded by Indian and Chinese labour. The photograph was probably taken on the Ulu Selangor extension between Kuala Lumpur and Kepong. This line, running north-west from Kuala Lumpur to connect it with the main mining areas, was started in 1890 and reached Rawing in 1892 and Kuala Kubu in 1894.

Izolphe's hairdressing saloon, the Grand Hotel, the Pilots Club and Abdoul Sanat, watch-makers; these premises were later taken over by Kennedy and Co. Further down the street are the offices of the Pinang Gazette press, which in the left foreground are the Criterion Tiffin and Billiard Rooms.

395 x 283 mm. A view from the sea looking towards the Port Dickson waterfront, with warehouses and commercial premises lining the seafront. Situated 17 miles south-west of Seremban and the principal sea resort of Negri [i.e. Negeri] Sembilan, the town was originally known as Arang-Arang but was renamed Port Dickson in 1889 after Sir John Frederick Dickson (1835-1891) (Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements 1885-1891).
