The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'Having seen the advantages of manuring many Africans are producing their own compost. This boy is chopping up maize stalks, which will be trampled and rendered into useful compost in the cattle boma [enclosure]. A few years agp[sic] it was the parctic[sic] to burn the stalks or feed them to their cattle'.
