The caption on the reverse of the photograph continues: '... on the southern shores of Cyprus. The site of Larnaca dates back to several hundred years B.C. when the Greeks established Kition which later (12th century) became one of the city kingdoms of the island. The most famous son of Kitium is the founder of the Stoic School of philosophy in Athens Zeno of Kitium. Here also...

The first 33 slides in the collection are Ektachromes numbered 501-533 by Marnham. They relate to a a very small area of the island, Kyrenia on the north coast, St Hilarion Castle on the heights behind the town, and Bellapais about 3 miles along the coast. In addition there are 5 Ektachromes of Curium on the south-west coast. These are stamped Sep [19]61 and arranged by processing number.

A view showing a Cypriot family posed for the camera inside their home: 'The interiors of the dwellings at Avgoru are poor, and their earthen floors are partly taken up in the storage of produce; nevertheless, their occupants are respectably clothed, and seem to turn their labour to good account, for there is an absence of that squalor and misery which we meet with among the poor in more highly-civilized communities' (Thomson, vol.2, p.51).
