One of the leading gold mining partnerships in Johannesburg in the early days, Meyer and Charlton claimed to have installed the first battery (a small one of three stamps) actually on the reef: this was sold in 1888 and the machinery seen here is a later version. 291 x 241 mm. A view looking along the valley towards the steep-sided Majuba Hill, scene of the British defeat on February 27 1881 and the death of General Colley, the commander. The Boers made their first assault from the steep western slope. The print is signed 'E. Caney Maritzburg' and has the caption: 'West side of Majuba Hill', and is also numbered 'No. 17.'
