Ancient monolith, Allahabad, 1880 - 1889

Scope and Contents

237x299mm. Showing a tall stone pillar or lat, with inscriptions carved on the lower portion. The capital is surmounted by a carved lion. This particular monument has not been identified: it does not appear to be the famous Pillar of Asoka, since that column was found without capital or ornament. Photographer probably Thomas A. Rust.

General view of the main temple building set inside an arcaded courtyard at or near Nowshera (or Naoshera), a cantonment town on the right tributary of the Chenab in the Mirpur district south of Murree. Angria’s Colaba [sic for Kolaba] prison 15066, 1850 - 1879

250 x 200 mm. View looking towards a fortified stone quadrangle. The writer of the original caption has evidently confused the southern part of Bombay Island with Kolaba, the mainland coastal district south of Bombay which was the stronghold of Maratha pirates from the 17-18th centuries. Nos. 4-27, 51 are scenes of the Royal Visit in November 1905, 19-26 being triumphal arches. The other subjects are the Maharajah and his family (1-3), Lallgarh Palace (28-50), Gujner (52-64), the Old Palace (65-82, 85), Bikaner City (83-84, 891-98 and Bikaner forces (89-90). There are printed captions: the collection is in a richly bound album...

An album, labelled on the spine, containing prints of various sizes. The numbering is sequenced from 1 to 131, but 101 is omitted. 14 of these prints are loose (118-131) , and are kept in a separate envelope in the album. Some of the prints are good quality professional work. Some of the photographs are captioned in ink; in other cases the titles have been derived from duplicate copies in Davies' other Indian album or from other photographs of the same scenes.
