Today a very small rural centre, Mount Perry had at the turn of the century a population of around 4000, making it one of the largest ten or twelve towns in Queensland. Originally the area was given over to scattered sheep runs but in 1869 copper was discovered and miners flocked to the area, many directly from Cornwall but also from other mining areas in Queensland. Scope and Contents Circular copper token 34 mm in diameter inscribed, 'A. Toogood Merchant Pitt & King St. Sydney’. On the reverse is a woman in classical dress representing Justice, holding a set of scales in her right hand, and an overflowing cornucopia in her left. She is seated on a wool bale, and behind her, a wine barrel lies on the ground and ship sails across the horizon. Above her ‘Australia’ and the date ‘1855’ are inscribed.The token had the value of a penny and was produced by W.J. Taylor...
