Scope and Contents

Decorative screen made for Arnold Danvers Power (1875-1959), bookseller and philanthropist, and bequeathed by him to the Royal Commonwealth Society, of which he had been a fellow. Power had travelled around the world three times, and during 1937-39, he commissioned the artist Heather Child to record his voyages on a screen, illustrated with incidents described in his diaries. It is made of three hinged panels of sycamore wood, each measuring 2 feet by 6 feet.

150 x 100 mm. By Sir Wilfred Collett, Governor of British Guiana, where the matched were held in October 1922. The captain of the victorious team was Sir Harold Austin (1877 - 1943) whose career in Barbados included membership of the Executive Committee, Presidency of the Board of Education and Speakership of the House of Representatives, brother of A.P.G. Austin who is also in the photograph.

Scope and Contents Collection of five albums of family photographs, made up almost entirely of amateur snapshots between 80 x 60 mm. and 110 x 150 mm., and many of which are of purely personal interest. However, taken as a whole, they comprise a record of aspects of life in Rhodesia and elsewhere in Africa of interest to the social historian. The albums are carefully annotated by Zöe Ellison towards the end of her life (she died in Cambridge on 4 August 1986, only a fortnight after her last letter to the RCS...

Scope and Contents From the File: Contains slides mainly in thick plastic frames marked 'Photopia', made in Germany, dark grey with a red top. The exceptions are numbers 72-75 in Kodachrome cardboard frames which link up with C and numbers 37-38 and 99-103 which are in silver Sytec frames. Some of the frames have brief captions pencilled on them, but these are very hard to read. Others have labels stuck on. A roughly written numbered list was in the original box. The list which follows has been derived from these...
