Sisal, which became one of the Bahamas’ major industries, was first introduced into the island from Yucatan in 1845 by C.R. Nesbitt, Colonial Secretary, and the industry was set on its feet by Sir Ambrose Shea, Governor of the Bahamas, 1887-1895. Another print of the same photograph can be found at Y307G/8 where the location is identified as Little Abaco.
