Scope and Contents 309 x 176 mm. Showing the statue of Sir William Peel (1824-1858) by Speed, with the Eden Gardens in the foreground. The third son of Sir Robert Peel, he entered the Royal Navy in 1838 and saw service in China, the Pacific, North America and the West Indies before winning the V.C. as a member of the Naval Brigade at Sevastopol. He commanded the Shannon and led the Naval Brigade in the Indian Mutiny and, after being wounded at Lucknow, died of smallpox at Cawnpore. See also Y3022BB/42. Bourne...

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: This collection is mostly of albumen prints of photographs taken in Burma [Myanmar] in the later nineteenth century. Many are captioned and the captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found. Titles supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets. Many photographs have been identified as the work of Felix Beato. All of these photographs belonged to Rodway Swinhoe (1863-1927), who may have bought them after the closure of Beato's emporium in Mandalay c.1906. On...

The draft of a history of Malacca by Maurice Hellier. The manuscript is incomplete, with chapters 4 and 11 missing. Part 2, 'Malacca memories', is a personal memoir of Hillier's life in Malacca from 1888 to the First World War, which describes the social life and customs of its European, Malay and Chinese inhabitants, education, religion, health, law and order, shipping and economic conditions. Another copy of the memoir is filed at RCMS 103/3/5.
