Situated 170 miles SSW of Madras on the Vennar River, Tanjore was one of the chief cities of the Chola and succeeding Hindu Kingdoms of southern India. Singapore, including its 50-odd offshore islands and islets has a land area of 617.8km. Its population of 2.4 million comprises 77 per cent Chinese, 15 per cent Malays, 6 per cent Indians, and 2 per cent of persons of other ethnic groups.

This complex was erected by King Thibaw's father who, anxious to preserve the holy books of Buddhism, caused the tenets to be inscribed on 450 stones above which a small domed building was erected.
