120 x 163 mm. Half length portrait of Sir Sidney Palmer (1890-1954) seated at a table. Palmer took up rubber planting in Malaya in 1909 and was Planting Member of the Perak State Council 1932-1942 and of the Federal Council of the F.M.S. 1934. He was several times President of the United Planting Association of Malaya.

Biographical material on the colonial administrator Sir William Maxwell (1846-1897) who served as Acting Governor of the Straits Settlements, 1893-95. It includes printed extracts from official documents covering his service in Malaya, 1875-87, a copy of a farewell address from Perak dated 1882, several newspaper articles, and correspondence with his son Sir George Maxwell, who also composed a biographical article (40 sheets).

Site for new hut with luck pole, 1907

Scope and Contents

Quarter-plate. The pole is placed in position before the building commences and will only be removed at the close. Pole is of Rucatoria wood, stripped of bark, and decorated at tip with a piece of palm leaf. When building is finished, Buddhist priest will come and chant sacred words, and take away the luck pole. (Fisher).

This flamboyant residential block was built by the firm of Martin & Co. in c.1911-12: the 1912 edition of Thacker's 'Bengal Directory' records the area as demolished and the following year lists the presence of the block. Scope and Contents 205x146mm. View showing the spot at the N.E. corner of the Post Office where the site of the Black Hole incarceration of 1756 is commemorated. A plaque on the wall recounts the details of the incident, and an area in front (paved with black marble in 1901 at the direction of Lord Curzon) is fenced off with iron railings. According to J.Z. Holwell, 146 men and women were forced into the tiny guardroom on the night of 20 June 1756, only 23 of whom survived to emerge the following day. This...

Nos. 4-27, 51 are scenes of the Royal Visit in November 1905, 19-26 being triumphal arches. The other subjects are the Maharajah and his family (1-3), Lallgarh Palace (28-50), Gujner (52-64), the Old Palace (65-82, 85), Bikaner City (83-84, 891-98 and Bikaner forces (89-90).
