Before railhead reached Nairobi in May 1899 there was no permanent population in the area, but with the decision to make Nairobi the headquarters for railway engineer work the town quickly grew. Molo is situated near the top of the Mau Escarpment about 8 miles before Mau Summit Station. Several such viaducts were needed to span ravines in the railways climb out the Rift Valley.
