Heart of Sir Geo. Somers here interred, 1910

101 x 151 mm. Showing the tablet erected in 1875 to Sir George Somers near the spot where his heart was interred in Bermuda. Somers was wrecked in Bermuda in 1609 and after building another boat on the island left with supplies for the Virginia Company's settlement at Jamestown (his original mission). On arrival they found the settlers starving and Somers volunteered to return to Bermuda for more supplies. He died however in Bermuda in1610, urging his men on his deathbed to return to...

From the Series:
Frome created a series of sketchbooks of various formats during his travels. Numbers 1 (Canada) and 4-5 (Mauritius) were missing when the collection came to Cambridge. The RCS sold numbers 2-3 (Australia) to the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1970. Numbers 6-7 and 11 had never been presented to the society. The great majority of the contents of the seven sketchbooks listed below had been removed in London, leaving only a few rough pieces.

Contains slides mainly in thick plastic frames marked 'Photopia', made in Germany, dark grey with a red top. The exceptions are numbers 72-75 in Kodachrome cardboard frames which link up with C and numbers 37-38 and 99-103 which are in silver Sytec frames. Some of the frames have brief captions pencilled on them, but these are very hard to read. Others have labels stuck on. A roughly written numbered list was in the original box.
