Joseph de Montcanisy at Caen, discussing sending money to a Knight in distress, Hompesch's appreciation of loyalty amid treachery and his hopes of returning to Malta. The letter is accompanied by 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 106 (October 1965), which includes the article 'Grand Master in exile', describing the circumstances of the document and including a free translation into English.

The letters were transcribed from originals in the Östereichisches Staatsarchiv in Vienna by Richard Gray for his 'A history of Southern Sudan' (1961).
