This is a studio portrait taken against a painted backdrop with props such as a tree trunk and branches in the foreground. From the heaviness of Gedge’s beard and the obviously old state of his clothes, it is likely that the photograph was taken shortly after one of his several African journeys of the 1890s.

It records the Royal party boarding HMS Vanguard, entertainment on deck during the voyage, and their arrival at Cape Town on February 17th 1947.
