Captain Sir Christopher Cole: Naval letter book

Scope and Contents The letter book covers Cole's naval service under Sir Edward Pellew and his successor, William O'Brien Drury. Much of the correspondence, including several long memoranda, are concerned with Cole's claim to a senior appointment in Pellew's squadron, which led to a breakdown in relations with his senior commander. His correspondence whilst serving at Penang includes a number of letters to the Governor in Council of an administrative nature. There is also a letter to Sir Thomas Stamford...

Scope and Contents

Fair copies of letters from Jardine, Matheson & Co. (J10/15-67) and its precursors (J10/1-14), Canton, Macao and Hong Kong, to correspondents in India, as well as some in the East Indies, Australia and other locations. Most of the letters are unsigned. Prior to 1832 the letters are from the companies that preceded Jardine, Matheson & Co., notably Charles, Magniac & Co. and Magniac & Co. C10/2-63 and C10/65-67 include indexes of recipients.

Conditions Governing Access: From the Fonds: Access to the collection is subject to special conditions and is at the discretion of Matheson and Co. Ltd, part of the Jardine Matheson Group. A statement of the conditions and an application form are available in the Manuscripts Reading Room. Printed copies of the form are available by post (please contact the University Library). An electronic version can also be found at https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/files/jm_permission_form.pdf. Records described in the catalogue as being in a bad condition are in a fragile state that precludes them being made available to readers. Access is generally available to documents dated up to 1969. Access to some earlier records may be restricted under the terms of the Data Protection Act, 1998.
