Scope and Contents A copy of journal entries written by Gooch while travelling on the Daedalus ship from Rio de Janeiro. In addition to accounts of daily life on the ship, the journal includes descriptions of Rio de Janeiro and his impressions of its people, customs and dress, with comments on the slave trade, crime and punishment, and the country’s natural resources [Mm.6.48: 139v-160v]. Scope and Contents

Set of rough astronomical calculations, with tables, notes, and sketches of islands ‘discovered’; the islands are unnamed, although reference points are sometimes given, such as ‘Island A’ [RGO 14/62: 141*v], or ‘Bay at C’ [RGO 14/62: 79v]. Interspersed among the notes are occasional doodles by Gooch [RGO 14/62: 88v], [RGO 14/62: 124r], and translations of [Polynesian] words [RGO 14/62: 124r], [RGO 14/62: 126-127], [RGO 14/62: 141*v].
