The Cheshire estates of Thomas Lowndes of Overton, Cheshire, who died in 1748 were bequeathed to the University to endow the Lowndian Professorship of Astronomy and Geometry.

John Hulse (1708-90) of St John's College bequeathed his estate to the University to fund the following:- 1) a Christian Advocate 2) an annual preacher 3) an annual religious prize dissertation 4) three scholarships at St John's College.
