Album containing photographs of various sizes together with three loose prints. From internal evidence it was compiled by Dr Cuthbert Christy, but was not with his papers and photographs received from the Royal African Society in 1972. Hawkes collection of Indian Railway Photographs

An album containing albumen prints of various sizes by R. Phillips of Darjeeling, Samuel Bourne and others. The name of F.A. Hawkes, who was an engineer on the North Bengal State Railways from 1871-1879, appears frequently in it. The photographs include the construction of the North Bengal State Railway, scenes in Darjeeling, amateur theatricals, portrait groups and Sir Richard Temple's camp at the Delhi Durbar of 1877.

The collection originally consisted of a heavy, custom-made wooden box containing large leather bound albums, each stamped in gold 'India 1872'. The photographs came from the firm of Bourne and Shepherd and this collection was put together by Marion and Co. 'The Vale of Kashmir seen under a cloud'
