The eruption of Mont Pelée, Martinique, 1902

Scope and Contents A collection of loose gravure prints measuring approximately 190 x 125 mm, captioned in ink on the backs of the prints. The captions have been used as titles and recorded as found.The great tragedy which overtook the island of Martinique and razed St Pierre in May 1902 is made more poignant by what we know of the city and its people before Mont Pelée erupted. Lafcadio Hearn spent some time on the island shortly before the disaster and gives a description which tallies with accounts...

'These tremendous years'

Scope and Contents Photographs, most measuring approximately 195 x 145 mm or 150 x 95 mm, which were originally housed in an album presented by Chapman to King George V and Queen Mary during the 1930s. Watercolours and drawings of Edward Frome

Scope and Contents This is a collection of art work created by the Royal Engineer Edward Charles Frome (1802-1890). In 1929 Frome’s surviving daughter, Mrs Frank Wynne, presented some of the South Australian drawings to the Royal Empire Society through the good offices of Sir Harry Wilson, to whom she bequeathed the rest of the collection.
