John Lewis Gay: Genealogical Memoirs

Scope and Contents A collection of coats of arms (mostly coloured), genealogical and antiquarian notes, monumental inscriptions, etc., probably made by John Lewis Gay, engraver, of Old Kent Road, London S.E. 65 folios. On fos 27v et seq. is a copy of the will of Mrs Elizabeth Chandler, 5 December 1843, appointing Gay as her executor, with copies of her burial certificate, bill for funeral expenses, etc., 1846. On fo. 34a is an account of the Gay family of Evington, Kent, 'faithfully extracted' by J.L. Gay....

Opinions of counsel and precedents of wills, conveyancing and pleas. The names of counsel are given. There are genealogical notes and monumental inscriptions on pages 155-62, 191-213, and 252-231 (reversing the volume), which, according to Ralph Griffin (fol. i r), are in the hand of Edward Hasted, the historian of Kent. However, his claim is not readily reconcilable with the dates of the legal material.

In addition sensitive correspondence and papers concerning College affairs such as disputes and disciplinary matters are closed for 100 years. Restrictions apply on some personal and private papers.

Scope and Contents The larger part of the collection dates from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, chronicling William Smith's personal and political career, as well as illustrating the lives of his wife Frances and their children. The collection includes letters from Smith's friends, among them Charles James Fox, William Wilberforce and Sir Francis Burdett. William Webb: Cambridge Pedigrees

Scope and Contents A series of pedigrees transcribed by William Webb, collected c. 1816-1853, 188 folios. The pedigrees were mainly supplied by the College of Arms. Nearly all are of members of Cambridge University, tracing their descent from Edward I or Edward III. There are also a few descending from Henry VII, and two examples descending from the kings of Scotland.
