Scope and Contents

'British enterprise in the West Indies and British Honduras', 85 pages, apparently compiled from various official publications, with several original sketch maps. The document is neatly written and arranged, and is dated and signed 'J.N. Cooper, June 1884'. It may be a paper prepared for an activity of the Royal Colonial Institute. There are some accompanying press cuttings on the West Indies colonies.

Colonialism: before and after

The formatting and content of each page have been reproduced as faithfully as possible to the original manuscript, and every effort was made to retain its style of presentation. Albumen print inserted into Fowler's ‘A narrative of a journey across the unexplored portion of the British Honduras’ (1879), showing a group of men standing amid tropical vegetation. In 1878 a sugar planter named Drake and a miner named Worth led an exhibition to the Cockscomb Range in the hope of discovering mineral resources. Scope and Contents

A collection of prints measuring approximately 125 x 100 mm. (Six of the photographs are postcards by Avery measuring approximately 135 x 85 mm). The prints are captioned on the reverse. The photographs, which show scenes in and around Belize City and Stann Creek (also known as Dangriga) as well as events during the coronation celebrations for George V in 1911, are sharply defined and of professional quality.

Sir George Arthur, Superintendent of British Honduras: papers

Scope and Contents Arthur was an efficient administrator and kept copies of virtually every official letter he wrote during his tenure as Superintendent and Commandant. These include dispatches to Bathurst on colonial affairs and to the Commander-in-Chief, Jamaica, regarding military administration. Letters to neighbouring Spanish colonies reflect his diplomatic responsibilities. Part of the collection relates to Bradley’s dispute with Arthur, which went before Parliament in 1837.
