Commonwealth Royal Tour, 1953-1954

Dedication of Jamaica War Memorial 1922

Collection of uncaptioned photographs by Cleary and Elliott, Kingston, Jamaica. The Memorial, a cross of island stone in front of the East Block of the Public Buildings in Kingston, was unveiled and dedicated on Armistice Day, 11 November 1922. Details for each photograph are derived from an accompanying Order of Service and the Jamaica Annual Report 1922.

Lady Swettenham collection (Malaya and Jamaica)

Scope and Contents

Photographs by various photographers and three other items. They relate to the career of James Alexander Swettenham, who, after serving in Ceylon and Cyprus, became Colonial Secretary in Singapore in 1895. He was Governor of British Guyana 1901-1904 and of Jamaica 1904-1907. His period in Singapore coincided with the service in Malaya of his more famous brother, Sir Frank Swettenham. Their father was James Oldham Swettenham, Solicitor of Belper.

Robert Maddocks Collection

Maddocks has written many articles on postal history, the majority reflecting his primary interest in the history of the Cameroons, particularly during the colonial period. He is the author of a monograph examining postal arrangements during the conquest of German Kamerun by the British and French during the First World War.
