Girl Guiding in Malaya [i.e. Malay Peninsula]

Collections of prints of various sizes. The captions have been recorded as found and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms.

Alexander Cavendish served in Malaya from 1901 to 1933 and became Director of Co-operatives. His wife, Mrs Jean Cavendish, had been appointed Organising Commissioner for Malaya by Lady Baden-Powell in 1920 and became Chief Commissioner in 1921, a post she held until retiring to England in 1933.

Newcuttings on the Straits Settlements

Scope and Contents A scrapbook of cuttings from newspapers of the Straits Settlements concerning events in the colony. Much of the volume is concerned with Brown's involvement with the Legislative Council. There are articles regarding his disputed nomination by the Penang Chamber of Commerce in 1893, and his appointment to the Council in 1894 and 1897. There is also extensive coverage of the Council’s work, including newscuttings on the passage of bills regarding harbours, Indian immigration, liquor, opium...

Newscuttings on Africa and South East Asia

Scope and Contents

The principal part of the collection is a set of thirteen scrapbooks of newscuttings relating to East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanganyika. The rest of the collection consists of a volume of cuttings relating to post-war trading opportunities in Nigeria and three scrapbooks concerning rubber and mining in South East Asia.

Views in Australia, Egypt, Aden, Asia and other places chiefly circa 1908-1915

Scope and Contents The collection was originally housed in seven boxes, four of which were specially made with individual slots for slides. These were numbered 3, 6, 10 and 11 and the remaining boxes were unnumbered. Presumably these formed part of a larger collection, but nothing is known of the original owner or the fate of any other boxes. For conservation reasons, the collection has since been re-boxed.
